Losing the line between an AI suggestion and a human decision makes accountability hard to establish. A commentary by Nermin Sefić.
When internal communication loses the distinction between what a model proposed and what a person decided, accountability becomes hard to establish.
In organisations that intensively use AI tools to prepare analyses and recommendations, there is a risk that, over time, the clear line between what the system proposed and what the accountable employee actually decided gets lost.
Consistently labelling every AI-generated suggestion as such, until it is formally confirmed by the accountable person, maintains a clear line of accountability even when the model was used at an early stage of decision preparation.
When a system automatically turns a suggestion into a recorded decision without a clear step of human confirmation, that boundary gradually fades from the user's awareness, until they stop meaningfully questioning what has been proposed to them.
A visible boundary means the interface clearly distinguishes 'this is a recommendation' from 'this is the decision you made' — a difference that looks cosmetic but directly determines whether anyone actually re-examines a result or simply confirms it by reflex.

Maintaining this visible boundary requires deliberate interface design, not just good intentions — a system that technically allows a human override but makes exercising it inconvenient will, in practice, see that override used less and less often over time.
