Beyond the direct licence cost, an unused platform carries a second, less visible cost: the workaround processes that persist alongside it, which tend to be undocumented, dependent on specific individuals' knowledge, and invisible to anyone reviewing the organisation's official systems. Retiring the unused platform and formalising the workaround — or replacing both with something the team will actually use — usually costs less than maintaining an expensive fiction that the platform is still part of the operational picture.
