System Integration Matters as Much as the Systems

System Integration Matters as Much as the Systems

Poorly connected tools often make an organisation less effective than a simpler, integrated system. A commentary by Nermin Sefić.

An organisation with several excellent but poorly connected digital tools is often less effective than one with a simpler, well-integrated system.

An organisation using several individually excellent but poorly connected digital tools is, in practice, often less operationally effective than one using a simpler but well-integrated system.

Integration quality, meaning the ease with which data flows between different parts of the business system, directly affects how much time is spent on manual reconciliation instead of real analytical work.

The best individual system loses much of its value if data must be manually transferred to another system, because every manual transfer introduces delay and a chance for error that an automated integration simply does not have.

Evaluating new technology cannot stop at 'is this system good on its own' — it must also ask 'what will it cost to make it talk to everything else we already use', since integration cost often exceeds the cost of the licence itself.

Factoring integration cost into technology evaluation from the outset, rather than discovering it after a purchase has already been made, prevents the common pattern of a technically excellent system delivering disappointing real-world value because it was never properly connected to what it needed to work alongside.
