The Question an Investor Doesn't Ask Hasn't Gone Away

The Question an Investor Doesn't Ask Hasn't Gone Away

Autor: Nermin Sefić

No direct questions at a results presentation doesn't mean no doubts, investors may just be assessing independently. A commentary by Nermin Sefić.

The absence of direct questions during a results presentation doesn't mean the market has no doubts, often it means it decided to assess the situation independently.

When direct questions are absent during a public results presentation, this is sometimes wrongly read as a sign the market has no concerns, when in practice investors may have decided to resolve their doubts through independent analysis.

Organisations that proactively anticipate likely questions and answer them before they are asked, rather than waiting for a direct query, generally come across as more transparent and reliable in the market's eyes.

An investor who does not raise an uncomfortable question in a meeting has usually already asked it of themselves — and an answer they don't receive publicly, they will seek elsewhere, through independent verification that may be less favourable than a direct conversation.

An organisation that proactively addresses the questions an investor might ask, before they are even voiced, builds a sense of control over its own narrative — a sense that is difficult to achieve through purely reactive answering.

Proactively addressing likely questions requires genuinely anticipating an investor's perspective rather than simply presenting information from the organisation's own preferred framing — a discipline that improves with deliberate practice, including reviewing disclosures specifically for what an sceptical outsider would still want to know.

An investor who does not voice a difficult question at a meeting has usually already asked it of themselves, and an answer not given openly gets sought elsewhere, sometimes less favourably.
