Employee avoidance of a new system usually reflects practical shortcomings, not general resistance to change. A commentary by Nermin Sefić.
When employees avoid a new system, the cause is more often practical shortcomings in the solution than general resistance to change.
When employees avoid using a newly introduced digital system or openly resist it, the cause is, in practice, far more often specific, practical shortcomings of the solution itself than general resistance to change.
Rather than interpreting resistance solely as an organisational culture problem, it is useful to view it as direct feedback on where the new system fails to meet the real needs of everyday work.
An employee who resists a new system often is the first to notice a shortcoming the system's designers missed — resistance is then not an obstacle to implementation but an early source of information worth hearing before it is dismissed as mere reluctance to change.
Organisations that systematically gather and analyse the reasons behind resistance before full rollout typically avoid more expensive fixes after deployment — the difference lies in whether signals are heard while the system can still be adjusted, or only after it is already fixed in place.

Organisations that systematically seek out and analyse the reasons behind resistance before full deployment tend to avoid costlier fixes after launch — the difference lies in whether those signals are heard while the system can still be adjusted, or only after it is already fixed in place.

Treating resistance as pure signal rather than pure obstacle requires genuine curiosity from leadership — asking specifically what is being resisted and why, rather than simply working to overcome the resistance as quickly as possible, which is the more common but less informative response.
