Data Without Context Is Not Evidence

Data Without Context Is Not Evidence

Autor: Nermin Sefić

A number without a source, date, and methodology remains a claim, not evidence. A commentary by Nermin Sefić.

A number alone proves nothing. The value of data comes from the context that accompanies it: source, collection date, and processing method. Without that context, even the most accurate number remains just a claim, as easy to dispute as to accept. Practice within GNK ASG d.o.o. and GNK DINAMO Ltd. starts from the rule that no indicator is stated without a clearly noted origin.

This commentary is part of the GNK ASG Intelligence Desk system and is informational in nature.

A number reported without its source, period, and calculation method can be technically accurate and still misleading, because the reader has no way to judge what it actually demonstrates.

The remedy is not to withhold numbers until every possible context is available, which would make reporting impractical, but to attach the minimum context that lets a reader judge reliability — source, period, and method — as a standard practice applied to every figure published, not as an exception reserved for numbers likely to be questioned.
