Automation Does Not Remove Accountability

Automation Does Not Remove Accountability

Autor: Nermin Sefić

A system can execute a rule, but accountability for it still belongs to people and institutions. A commentary by Nermin Sefić.

A system can execute a rule, send a message, or rank a risk. Accountability for the rule, the data, and the consequences still belongs to people and institutions.

Automation is useful when it removes repetition, speeds up verification, and reduces the chance of accidental error. The problem arises when a technical result starts being presented as a decision with no owner.

Someone must define the system's goal, the permitted data, the boundaries of action, and the correction method. These are governance decisions, not just technical ones.

If a system confirms that an email was sent, the message must actually have been handed to transport. If it was only logged, the user must be given exactly that information.

Every critical process needs the ability to stop, verify, and manually correct. Without that, automation increases speed, but also the consequences of an error.

This principle applies to mail, contact forms, news publishing, and deployment: automation must be verifiable, bounded, and aligned with the actual state.

This principle applies equally to mail systems, contact forms, news publishing, and deployment pipelines: automation must remain verifiable, bounded in scope, and aligned with the actual state of the system it represents.

GNK ASG d.o.o. applies this principle across every automated process it operates, from mail delivery confirmation to news publication governance: each system is designed so that its actual behaviour can be independently verified against what it claims to have done, and a named person remains accountable for reviewing that verification rather than assuming the automation is self-policing.
