When it later becomes impossible to reconstruct why a model reached a given conclusion, its apparent usefulness loses much of its real value.
The ability to later reconstruct why an AI system proposed a specific recommendation at a given moment is just as important as the quality of the recommendation itself at the time it was made.
Without a proper audit trail, including model version, input data, and time frame, subsequently verifying the correctness of a decision becomes nearly impossible, raising serious accountability questions in the event of a dispute.
Without a record of which data was used, which model version was applied, and who approved the final result, an AI decision becomes unrepeatable and unverifiable — even if it was correct at the time, it cannot later be proven why.
An audit trail is therefore not an add-on to an AI system but a core part of it, as important as the algorithm itself — it allows any decision to be reconstructed and explained months or years after it was made.
